We wrapped up our time in Massachusetts on our USA trip with a hike on two trails, the Charcoal Trail (3.2 km, ascent/descent 160 m) and the Burbank Trail (5.5 km, ascent/descent 210 m, in the Yukon Ridge reserve near Lenox.

The Shaker Loop trail is 10.5 km long with 355 m ascent and descent. This loop took us through the Pittsfield State Forest reserve and past some historical points of interest for the Shaker religious order.

While taking a trip back to the US to visit family and friends, we went out for a short loop hike at Mount Tom State Reservation in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The trail we did was the Goat Peak View loop trail, a lovely forest hike up to an observation tower with 360 degree views.

The Creux du Van Loop Trail is a 14 km hike with approximately 780 m of ascent and decent. This moderately challenging trail leads up to the Creux du Van, a large semi-circular rock cliff. The Creux du Van is a completely natural formation shaped solely by ice, erosion, and rain, and an impressive sight.

For a winter hike with great views, the Engelstock Loop Trail is an excellent choice. At 5k with 148 m of ascent and descent and with several restaurants along the way to choose from, we found this loop made for a very relaxing day out. And, it is also a fantastic hike in the summer!

The powerful Rhine Falls are an easy and fun day trip from Zürich. I recently went there with my in-laws for a short winter hike.

While in Naples, Italy, we visited Pompeii and Herculaneum (two ancient cities buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79) and hiked the Cone Loop at Mount Vesuvius.

A loop combining three shorter trails – the Adliswil Trail (1.5 k, with 300 ascent), the Felsenegg Trail (3.1 k and approximately 30 m ascent and descent), and the Balderen Trail (3.6 k and approximately 100 m ascent and descent).

The very popular Pizol 5-Seen-Wanderung (or 5-lakes Hike) is an absurdly beautiful trail with gorgeous lakes and amazing expansive panoramas. According to one source, this hike it is 11k with 553 ascent and 911 m descent.

The Chüebodensee loop hike at Elm is a 8 km hike with approximately 640 m of ascent and decent. This moderately challenging trail leads up to the Chüebodensee, a small alpine lake.

The Goldauer – Bergsturzspur Loop (route 828) is an 8km long hike with 540 m elevation change. This hike takes you through the Goldau landslide area.
