Hiking the Alpine Panorama Trail – Stage 20 Schwarzsee to Jaun

Stage 20 of the Alpine Panorama Trail (Route 3) is a 12 km hike with 720 m ascent and 750 m descent that goes from Schwarzsee to Jaun. I loved this stage! The views were truly incredible! The Schwarzee lake, the Breccaschlund high mountain valley, and the top of the Euschel Pass – each unique and breathtaking! And with several charming mountain huts to stop at along the way, we could really take our time and savor the experience.

Getting There

The Alpine Panorama Trail is best done with public transportation as each stage starts and ends at different points. This stage starts at the Schwarzsee, Gypsera bus stop and ends at the Jaun, Dorf bus stop.

After arriving at the bus stop, we headed to the lake and the start of our trail.

The Trail

The Schwarzsee lake is really very lovely so we spent a little time admiring the view (the first of many fantastic views on this stage) before we got started.

The begining of this stage goes along the lake shore. You can’t tell from the pictures, but this section was very busy. It was a holiday weekend and there is an easy loop around the lake that seemed to be very popular for families with small children.

At the far end of the lake, the trail heads into the forest and follows along a small stream. There was quite a bit of elevation gain here and I was glad that I had my hiking sticks.

When we reached the alp hut (Untere Rippa (german)) in the pictures below, we stopped for a drink and some meringues with double cream. We also said hello to the cows and admired the amazing views.

The next section of the hike was through the Breccaschlund high-mountain valley. The views here were stunning! And although we didn’t stop, we passed another mountain hut (St, Antony Brecca (german)).

The trail looped back and we got an amazing view back towards the Schwarzsee before continuing up (past another mountain hut) and over the Euschel pass towards Jaun.

When we reached the top of pass, we were met with one of the most outstanding views of the trail.

We loved this part of the hike! Such dramatic views!

The final section of the hike down to Jaun was rather steep. At first the trail was on a paved road but later it left the road and became a dirt path through pastures and then a winding loose-rock trail through the forest.

When we reached Jaun, we passed by a cute miniature village someone had created. And we got a good view of Jaun falls at the very end of the hike.

Getting Back

We had an hour wait for our bus, so we stopped at the Restaurant Wasserfall (german) for a drink on the patio.

This was a really great stage. My original plan had been to do this and the next stage with an overnight in Jaun but due to scheduling reasons, we decided to do this as a day hike instead. Even though we spent more time getting to and from this hike than we spent hiking it, it was worth it. I loved this stage!
