Hiking the Alpine Panorama Trail – Stage 9 Unterägeri to Zug

Stage 9 of the Alpine Panorama Trail (Route 3) is a 13 km long trail with 240 m ascent and 560 m descent that goes from Unterägeri to Zug. This stage isn’t particularly exciting, but it is pretty and pleasant, and rather perfect for an easy walk on a chilly day. Plus, Zug is a lovely lakeside town with lots of options for getting a bite to eat at the end of the hike.

Getting There

The Alpine Panorama Trail is best done with public transportation as each stage starts and ends at different points. This stage starts at the Unterägeri, Zentrum bus stop.

After we arrived, we found our trail markers and were on our way.

The Trail

While the trail started at the center of town, Unterägeri isn’t very big, and after a short stroll through the main streets, we were soon out of town and into farmland.

Hiking through the hills toward Zug for the first half of the hike was easy as the climb was generally quite gradual. And, although there was a bit of snow and ice, it wasn’t very slippery.

After cresting the hill and with Zug in sight, we were about halfway done with the hike. The lovely views from here were a bit familiar as we had hiked a bit of this trail before when we did the ZBB Trail Suggestion #12 from Zugerberg to Baar. As we hiked down towards Zug, we passed through a number of the cherry orchards, and someday I will come back in the spring to see the cherry blossoms for which Zug is famous.

Just above Zug, we passed the St. Verena chapel. We stopped in and were pleasantly surprised that the Christmas manger scene was still on display.

After reaching Zug, the trail passed through some of the cobblestoned streets of the old town before heading along the lake promenade.

We stopped for lunch at an Italian Restaurant on the lake front called San Marco. It was ok, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat there again.

Getting Back

Usually from Zug, you get great views across the lake of Mount Rigi, but not today – too much haze. I’ll be sure to take some pictures across the lake when we do the next stage. Then from the lake side, it is just a short walk to the main train station and the end of the hike.

It was fun getting out and making progress on Route 3, but I don’t think this stage will be making my top ten. Only way to find out though, is to keep hiking. I’m ready for the next stage!
