Post-Hike Cheeseboard

One of my top tips for hiking in Switzerland is to always have some cash with you, particularly small bills and coins. Why? You never know when you are going to come across a cheese dairy, a self-service farm store or even just a generator powered fridge where if you have exact change you can purchase some unique and often amazing local cheeses. (Note: These days some farm stores also accept TWINT – the Swiss payment app.)

If you haven’t eaten the cheese as a picnic snack on the hike, you have a good start to an easy, no-cook dinner (or appetizer/snack) – the cheeseboard. So, besides the cheese, what do you need for your post-hike cheeseboard? Here are my suggestions:

  • nuts
  • fruit, fresh or dried
  • bread and or crackers
  • olives, cornichons, pickled onions
  • sun-dried tomatoes
  • more cheese
  • salami, dried meat
  • mustard
  • marmalades, fruit spreads or preserves

Occasionally, some of these items will be for sale alongside the cheeses. We have purchased crackers, dried meats, and fruit preserves on various hikes. We even got goat jerky once. And I once saw a fruit basket vending machine. Usually though, to round out the meal we make a stop at a regular grocery store (Coop or Migros) or if it is Sunday and the regular stores are closed, a gas station or one of the convenience stores near the train station (Migrolino, Avec, Coop Pronto). Now, generally speaking, I just put everything out on the table still in the packaging and everyone just takes what they like. But, sometimes, I spend the time to artfully arrange everything. In fact, I recently learned how to make salami roses.

Then, just pair it all with a glass of wine and you have the perfect dinner.

See how pretty and tasty that looks? And, it really is one of the most affordable and wonderfully Swiss food experiences you can have.
