Swimming Across Lake Zürich – Thalwil to Küsnacht (Seeüberquerung)

Every summer, there are multiple Seeüberquerung (lake crossing) events where you can swim across Lake Zürich with a crowd of people and safety boats alongside. My husband and I did one two years ago, but because it was a one-off event, I didn’t write about it on the blog. This year, we did the Thalwil to Küsnacht Seeüberquerung, a yearly event run by SLRG SSS – Ihr Rettungschwimmer (Swiss Lifeguard Association).

(Canton Zürich)
Cost 202525 CHF.

This entry fee included transport across the lake of one bag containing our equipment (towel, sandals, etc), a sandwich to eat after the swim, and boat transport back across the lake to the start. It also included the use of a personal swim buoy, although I don’t know if that is available every year.

Note: This events sell out quickly so if you do want to do it, look to sign up in early July.

We started the day at the Badeplatz Ludretikon in Thalwil. We checked in and got our orange swim caps (I was number 11 and my husband was number 12) and took a lakeside picture while I was still in my Mrs. Roper caftan. After stripping down to my swimsuit and handing over our bags for transport, we were ready to swim across.

This swim across to Küsnacht is 1.8 km and it took me 1:15 minutes of leisurely swimming. This is a social event and not a race. (We were actually swimming with a group from our Swiss German class.) After getting out of the water at the Küsnacht Badi, we were rewarded with a sandwich and bottle of water. Tired but happy, we ended the event with a boat ride back across the lake to the start.

Will I do another Seeüberquerung? Maybe, swimming across the lake feels like a real accomplishment and it is a fun thing to do! And if not the Thalwil to Küsnacht Seeüberquerung event by SLRG SSS – Ihr Rettungschwimmer (Swiss Lifeguard Association), maybe the Rüschlikon Turnverein one, or the Stadtzürcher one!
