Visiting the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MassMoCA) in North Adams, MA, USA

After years of saying we should visit MassMoCA, we finally went and I am so happy we did! It is a terrific museum and I think anyone who spends time in Western Massachusetts should check it out. In particular, the Into The Light exhibit by James Turrell is very cool and it is worth making the time-slot reservation needed to see it.

The Tour

After parking, we walked to the entrance to buy our tickets and start our tour. Along the way, we passed an art vending machine which set the stage for the kind of art we would experience in the museum as did the industrial setting – MassMoca is located inside a former factory building.

Once inside, we did a self-guided tour. While I took some photos, photos were not allowed at my favorite exhibit – Into The Light exhibit by James Turrell. That exhibit also requires a time-slot reservation to see it, and I highly recommend doing so (unless you have an issue with strobe-lights or bright lights in general.) Here are some photos from a few others that I really enjoyed:

Many of the exhibits are large and immersive but contemporary art has room for more traditional pieces as well – see the list of all exhibitions. They change fairly often but if you get the chance to see Audience by Amy Podmore, take your time and watch the eyeballs – they blink!

I really enjoyed this museum and may even go back someday. I highly recommend it.
