Visiting the Transportation Museum (Verkehrshaus) in Luzern

The Transportation Museum (Verkehrshaus) in Luzern is a museum dedicated to all modes of transportation – trains, planes, automobiles, bicycles, gondolas, and even space travel. With loads of fun interactive stuff for kids and well labeled exhibits for adults, this museum is perfect for all ages. While we have only done the museum portion of it spending about 3 hours touring the exhibits, there is so much at this museum, you could probable spend the whole day and still not see or do it all.

The Tour
After arriving a the museum, we purchased our tickets, had lunch at the on-site self-service restaurant (not bad, but a bit pricey), and then headed out to the museum exhibits. There is a huge outdoor area with scooters and other amusements for children. I love the building covered with street signs holds the automobile display.

In the various buildings, there are fantastic displays of trains, planes, automobiles, bicycles, gondolas, and even space travel! The car show in particular is very fun. As each car is discussed, it is brought down on a lift from the display case so that you can get a closer view (sort of like a car vending machine.) In the space travel section, they have a real moon rock you can look at along with models of the Mars rovers.

This museum is a great rainy-day activity. I almost always recommend this museum to guests visiting Switzerland and so while this visit wasn’t my first, I doubt it will be my last. It is a classic!
